Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Whendi Grad, Co-Owner of BIG ISLAND BEES, located in Captain Cook, HI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We pack and distribute a variety of single-blossom Hawaiian honey produced from our own beehives. Our customers are both local honey lovers and tourists wanting to bring back a sweet memory of their visit to the island.
Tell us about yourself
I married into a fourth-generation beekeeping family. I saw the care in which our honey was being produced ( we are certified organic) and felt it should be packed and marketed with the same care. I started packing it in 2004; previously, it was all sold in 55-gallon drums to honey packers on the mainland.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We have continued to provide a high-quality, special product unique to Hawaii.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Agriculture is hard work and unpredictable. As a business owner, I have learned to accept that I cannot control everything. There are always fires to put out and obstacles to overcome.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Look around and see if what you are offering is wanted and needed in the community.
- Be proud of what you are creating and strive to maintain excellence.
- Work hard and show up!
