Developing High-Caliber Athletes - Beyond Performance

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in sports and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Francis Huldi, MA, CSCS, TSAC-F, CES, FMS, Founder of Beyond Performance LLC., located in Pleasant Hill, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our mission at Beyond Performance is to provide athletes at all levels with a comprehensive approach to achieving their athletic potential and enhancing sports performance by utilizing evidence-based training methodologies. Our athletes play at all levels of competition, from recreational to professional, in all disciplines of sports.

Tell us about yourself

I am absolutely fascinated with the elastic limits of the human body and have a passion for helping athletes push the boundaries of their athletic potential. I love sports and, even more so, love to compete. I chose to start my own business because I have a vision that redefines sports performance not as what it is but as what it can become. Imagine not only training like a professional athlete but being treated like one too. The Beyond Performance vision is to provide an unparalleled service that unites Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, Strength & Conditioning, Chiropractic Care, Sports Nutrition Counseling, and Sport Psychology under the same roof to provide our athletes the most comprehensive approach possible to enhancing sports performance.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a relatively new business owner, I haven't had any major accomplishments yet, however, I will say that making the decision to fully commit to the dream of running my own business was an accomplishment in and of itself. It can be difficult to start, even scary at times, but ultimately embracing the roller coaster ride and trusting the process has been the best decision I have made so far.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are many hard things that comes with being a business owner. For me, the hardest thing so far has been accepting that I will fail and that I will fail many times before I achieve the dream of owning and operating my own training facility. It is something that still does not come easy, but letting go of the fear of failure, I believe, is the key to reaching your full potential and bringing your vision to fruition. If you let fear stand in your way, it is going to be really hard to get anywhere. It's okay to be afraid, just don't let it stop you from taking action and chasing your dream.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The first piece of advice I would give anyone looking to start a business is simply to just start. I spent a lot of time worrying about when the best time to start is, what is the best way to start, and what if I fail. That brings me to my second piece of advice. You will most definitely fail; it's basically a guarantee. You can spend all the time in the world looking for the best way to do something and still fail, so you might as well just jump in the deep end and start failing now. If you can learn to become comfortable with failure, there is no limit to what you can achieve. It simply becomes a matter of when you succeed, not if.

My last piece of advice is to ask and learn as much as you can from those around you. You don't have to reinvent the wheel; you just have to find the wheel that works best for you. Networking with individuals in your industry, as well as other small business owners, will provide you with more value than you know what to do with. Learn, ask questions, and then ask even more questions. Be relentlessly curious!
