Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kim Hoogeveen, Co-Founder of BetterCulture, located in Bellevue, NE, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

BetterCulture is an Omaha-based technology company that helps its clients build dominantly successful workplace cultures. We work with people and organizations that understand that a healthy work culture helps create a more successful business.

We launched BetterCulture after a decade of in-person work, helping organizations develop their people, build their culture, and grow their business. We offer businesses a proven process for improving workplace culture. If your organization is interested in understanding workplace culture, measuring your current culture, aligning your executive team, growing your supervisors, or activating all employees to positively contribute to culture – you won't find a better resource and partner than BetterCulture.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a psychologist and long-time CEO. Prior to BetterCulture, I served as the founding CEO of QLI. During my 24-year tenure, we accomplished a lot. We grew the organization into the largest specialized provider of its kind in the nation, and QLI was recognized repeatedly as the #1 Best Place to Work in Omaha.

Our mission at BetterCulture is to make the world a better place to work. I've found most business leaders to be good people who want a healthy work culture for their business, but they don't know how to create it. I enjoy working with good people who are eager and open to new ideas to help improve their work culture and grow their business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm proud of all the work we've done to help our clients win the battle for talent and build more successful businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Leading in a way that will allow your organization to attract, grow, motivate, and retain great talent. Culture owns talent, and without great talent, it's almost impossible to have a thriving business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

It's tough to only pick three, but I'll give it a shot.

  1. Adopt our Seven Principles of Leadership.
  2. Carefully select those who you put in supervisory positions, i.e., get the right people in those roles.
  3. Provide those leaders with top-notch training so they can make the principles come to life for employees.
