Healthy Relationship With Food & Exercise - Erika Bettermann

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erika Bettermann, owner of Better Health Nutrition - Denver, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Better Health Nutrition - Denver provides nutrition counseling for individuals whose relationship to food, exercise, or their body has been affected by diet culture. In order to truly optimize your health, the stress around eating and exercise needs to be removed. All foods have room to be enjoyed, and restriction is never the answer.

Diets are proven to not only be unhelpful but often ultimately leave people in a worse space mentally and physically than where they began. Therefore, I promote a non-diet approach to nutrition through intuitive eating and an inclusive lens. I want to help people understand why and how to eat rather than just what to eat. My goal is to help others build a strong relationship with food and exercise while addressing other factors such as stress, sleep, and pre-existing conditions that all play a role in our health and wellness.

Tell us about yourself

I am originally from Pennsylvania. After undergrad, I moved to Atlanta to get my Master of Public Health and, a few years later, get my Master in Nutrition to become a registered dietitian. I have had an interest in nutrition and health for a long time. I am so blessed to be able to have the education and experience to provide others with quality nutrition support. I absolutely love making connections with others and helping them find their most fulfilled self.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was selling to my first client. She came to me because of the messages I'd shared on my Instagram and website and felt moved to make a change in her life. I'll never forget the feeling of hearing from that first client!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is networking! I moved to Denver from Atlanta in September 2021, not knowing anyone in my field. Establishing connections with other healthcare providers, coaches, and gyms for referrals has been incredibly difficult but rewarding when I develop those relationships.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Attend as many networking events as you can and really work on developing relationships with others in your area of work.
  2. Figure out who your ideal client is and try to market to them.
  3. Don't get discouraged! It takes so much time to grow a business, so don't sweat the small stuff!
