What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a virtual personal trainer who teaches people to build strong muscles and healthy joints so they can stay active and happy for life. My clients tend to be people who are recovering from an injury and want to not feel restricted by their pain. I hope in the future that it will be people who want to be proactive about having a strong body to avoid injury in the first place.
Tell us about yourself
I became a trainer and started my business because growing up I watched my mom's health decline. She didn't know how to take care of her body. Random back pain, bad knees, and trouble catching her breath kept her from taking long walks, playing sports with her friends, and keeping up with us kids. Because my mom's body couldn't keep up with the activities that brought her joy, her confidence and excitement for life faded slowly.
When I became a fitness professional, I learned that many of the ailments that are holding people back are preventable with proper strength training that focuses on building strong joints, good posture, and a healthy heart. While it is too late to help my mom, it's not too late to help others. I am motivated each day to do my job because I know the impact that I'm making in my clients' lives. They are able to move their bodies and accomplish physical feats that they didn't even know were possible.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is my partnership with SquashBusters. I believe starting a fitness journey is for all ages, but the biggest impact will be made if we start when we're young. SquashBusters provides me the opportunity to teach middle and high school students how to build a strong and resilient body from a young age. This headstart they get will allow them to stay active and injury-free throughout their adulthood. They will not have to say "I can't" because of back pain, sciatica, you name it. Their bodies will be resilient.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is managing my time appropriately. Seeing clients one-on-one and running workout sessions for organizations can often get in the way of admin work, lead generation, and meetings. I've learned to create designated times to see clients, make meetings, and get my admin work done. Still, not every day goes ideally. I try my best.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find a mentor to bounce ideas off of. They can validate an idea or point you in the right direction when you need it.
- Prioritize sleep. You'd be surprised how much more you can accomplish in the day when you're getting a full night's sleep.
- Don't let the fear of what others might think of you hold you back.
