Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bethany McCamish, CEO of Bethany Works®, located in Battle Ground, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm the CEO and owner of a strategic brand and web design studio. We work with tenacious creatives, driven visionaries, and owners of swoon-worthy destinations. Put simply; I'm obsessed with making your ideas look and feel good through psychology-backed design and strategy so you can build a legacy brand.
Tell us about yourself
I hold a BFA, years of experience teaching graphic design and English, and nearly a decade spent curating art shows in my local community. That is to say; I know which visuals attract audiences and which stories stick. And I'm on a mission to get more of the good brand stories out—starting with yours.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating a design studio that is founded on so much more than trends and quick turnaround with little to no substance. We aren't a jiffy lube service, and we are proud of that. Our work is so deep that I know it will yield massive transformations for my clients, and THAT is the point. For them to have a momentum-building, money-generating brand to leave their impact. I like to say that we are there to help brands stop leaving money and impact on the table.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Setting up boundaries and being able to guard your energy. As creatives in this world, not only are we facing an uphill battle to prove the 'worth' of our work, but to also assemble work that is one of a kind, unmistakable, and true for the client. That kind of situation can drain my energy, which is why I put up important boundaries for myself and my clients to protect that energy.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Be open to change. Be open to failure because it will happen. Be ready to make decisions and keep making them while you build trust with yourself. Honestly, owning a business can be like a huge mirror for what you do well and what you don't, plus those things you need to work on as a leader. All of this means change, failure, change again and learning to trust yourself.
