Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Beth Lewis, founder of Beth Lewis Therapy Group, located in Fort Worth, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Beth Lewis Therapy Group is a private family therapy practice that houses Fort Worth's best therapists. I actively teach my staff my brand of therapy, which, simply put, is therapy as self-care. We work with each family member as individuals, relationships, and the family as a whole. We lean more into the human condition and strategies for well-being and less into diagnosis. We believe each and all of our clients desire emotional health and personal growth. We work with Fort Worth's healthiest families!

Tell us about yourself

I have a rebellious spirit. While my peers were going to college and wearing greek letters in the 90s (my young adult years), I was writing original music with a rock band in Deep Ellum, playing shows throughout some of Texas' most iconic music halls and venues, as well as up and down the east coast. That entire chapter of music was sparked by the falling out of my own family of origin. I weathered what felt to me like a rather painful divorce of my parents. Once the reactive rebelliousness settled, I married, had my dreamy daughter, and settled into attending college and educating myself through my Bachelors in Psychology, my Masters in Family Counseling, and the 3000 hours required of Supervision to obtain my LPC-S license (Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor). Today, and every day that I am in my therapy chair seeing clients, and every day when I teach my staff, I use my personal storyline to support and genuinely help our spectacular clients and families who give the Beth Lewis Therapy Group the honor of being in their corner.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I find it to be a big accomplishment, as an entrepreneur, each day when our offices are buzzing with our staff and clients, when we have new clients coming through our doors, when we record and promote our podcast (find it on our website!) and when we gather for our staff meetings. I am passionate about my therapy group and the excellent services we provide to our clients. Getting to love what I do truly and to work with the finest therapists and the healthiest families in DFW are my biggest accomplishments, and I have the fortune of experiencing such most days of the week.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For my business, the hardest thing is breaking the stigma of therapy and sharing the perspective that therapy is sought and experienced by healthy families. Typically, we collectively like to view therapy as a process for those who "have something wrong,"...and while often any of us who seek therapy may be experiencing something difficult, ultimately the client-therapist relationship is used for the ongoing observation of the health and wellness already in each of us. We bring that to the surface, allowing our clients to experience their own strengths and health. We pride ourselves in being part of our community's self-care, not part of something we should hide or keep on the down-low.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a giant work ethic.
  2. Save money and learn how to accurately and promptly pay taxes and fees required to pay as a small business.
  3. Hire only the best.
