Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tapuwa Madziyire, owner of BestDry, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business strives for air quality. Allergens are found in homes on your floors, surfaces, etc. We strive to remove allergens and change your quality of life with your quality of air. Our customers are simple, they want to improve their health, and we provide the service that can benefit your health long term.
The world needs to be cared for, and change is inevitable to better benefit our next generation. YES... We aim to educate all our customers via social media and in person on how our company is environmentally friendly and safe for elders, babies, and pets. We are more than a company, we are a family.
Tell us about yourself
I've been in the carpet cleaning industry for 17 years under the wing of my father, who decided to invest in carpet & upholstery cleaning in 2004. I was fired from a previous job and expecting a child with my now fiancé and mother to our wonderful son in 2021 in the month of March. I had a decision to make, and I've failed over the years with multiple startups, which led to depression and going missing.
The only thing I had was my word, a father to be, and the love of my life next to me. Being observant for over 17 years definitely made it easier to start my own business with the knowledge and experience of how to fail and keep moving. That is when I decided to open my own business and become a better version of myself, and that's what I did, and I never looked back.
What motivates me is my family and remembering my journey because of my choices. I was lost, depressed, and went missing, and throughout those trials & tribulations, I remember it's the simple things in life that will bring you to your happy moment, which is every day moving forward. My advice is don't forget where you come from and define your own purpose.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is staying true to myself and knowing the value I can bring to create a chain reaction of positivity. The chain reaction is now being spread out exponentially with the willingness to do good for someone else. This is something important for our youth to understand, and they've seen that more than ever during the pandemic, and we want to carry that forward.
The distance between reality and dream can only be measured by motivation.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is sacrifice. Being consistent and maintaining relationships will be difficult. You learn a lot every day, and it's up to you as a business owner to adapt and learn in those moments to create a platform and system that can grow into its own one day.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- To start, please do your research and develop a business plan.
- Implement or enhance a system to create an operable daily business.
- Don't be afraid to fail but adapt.
