Tell us about yourself
I tell people that I fell into this business. I first began on the retail side of fashion when I created and sold pocket square holders online. I initially invented the device for myself, but my wife encouraged me to sell it online, and that's when I created my first brand (OSK Styles). Sales quickly increased over a year and a half but then fell just as quickly when I was forced to change the design due to patent issues. I didn't want to give up the business but had to change direction, so I reached out to a master tailor who was making suits for me personally. I explained my goal of bringing extremely well-made suits and shoes to an audience that could afford and appreciate the items. He agreed to make suits for my brand. From that point, it was a mad dash to partner with other master artisans so that we could offer anything the client may need when it came down to custom-crafted pieces.
It brings me great joy being able to design and create a garment that someone is not able to find in stores due to sizing or unique color elements. However, my true motivating factors are my kids. I look at my son and daughter each day and get an immediate internal push to grow, grow, grow so that I can provide them with a comfortable life.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Two things quickly come to mind when asked that question. I would say the first is just keeping the business going, period. Bespoke clothing is an easy business to get into but difficult to maintain and grow at a consistent rate. The second accomplishment would be not just getting through the pandemic but growing revenue throughout the pandemic!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The "I can do it all" syndrome is something that plagues all business owners at some point. Because you know the ins and outs of your business and it's your "baby," you feel that you are the only one capable of completing all tasks. This, however, can limit growth potential and keep you bogged down with administrative tasks that keep you busy but not productive. It's extremely difficult to relinquish responsibility/oversight of some things in the business, but it's necessary for growth.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start now! Don't put it off anymore; just start because there will be certain aspects of the business that you just need to experience firsthand that can't be taught or planned out.
- Thoroughly understand what makes your business unique within the industry and be an expert in your field.
- Always deliver on what you offer or say you will do and treat every client like a VIP.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I encourage anyone who is looking to start/run a business to go out and be amazing at it! You don't have to solve all of the world's problems to have a thriving company. Just provide a better product/service than your competitors and do it on a consistent basis.
