The Office Professional Hair Studio - Benson Hedges
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Benson Hedges, founder of The Office Professional Hair Studio, located in Richmond Hill, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Our business is the home of the ultimate experience. We pride ourselves on providing exceptional service consistently. Just as a custom suit is tailored, this is the way we serve each and everyone that walks through our door. A look, haircut, and colour that is completely customized to match and enhance their individual style. At The Office Hair Studio, we wanted it to become an establishment where anyone, no matter hair texture, age, or style, would feel comfortable. We have a wide range of all walks of life, ages eight all the way to 60. That is what makes the atmosphere and experience so unique. We believe in meshing both worlds of cosmetology and barbering to bring anyone's hair inspiration and look to life. The Office Academy was created to propel those who seek to grow their passion for whatever field they choose to specialize in. Whether it's professional men's grooming, IG-worthy balayage's, skilled cutting techniques, etc., ensuring their journey is filled with knowledge, skill, and success.
Tell us about yourself
My love for the business aspect came from the passion I have for art. There is something so uniquely rewarding about being able to change and uplift someone through enhancing their hair and style. I always knew I wanted to make an impact in my life, and I have been very fortunate to find a passion that continues to burn and bring happiness. Having a purpose in life, no matter what that purpose, will keep you focused on what it is that you need to do. Know that as a business owner, platform educator, husband, and leader, it's simply not about me. Having these roles in my life has granted me the continued growth I need to fulfill my purpose.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest accomplishment was finding my two partners to help me run The Office Hair Studio & The Office Academy. It is a vital aspect to be able to align with others that share your vision, passion, and work ethic. Everyone knows that two heads are better than one, and three are better than two. Having my brother Hugo and my beautiful wife Victoria as my business partners/owners on this journey has been a blessing. Ensuring that with a great team, you can trust that the vision continues to grow and having support to complete other tasks makes it worth it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest challenge of being a business owner has to understand that you are many roles in one. You're a business owner, artist, husband, educator, designer, handyman, etc., and the list goes on. At any time, you must be able to pivot and move from one role to another without getting stuck. Taking care of yourself is definitely something you must prioritize. As an artist being in the industry for 20 years, I now understand the importance of doing my best to book in the times I need, just as we do our clients. You can never pour from an empty cup. Therefore you must make sure you give yourself the things that keep you strong, happy, and healthy. Once you can do that to the best of your ability, it gives you the added advantage of excelling in all other areas of your life. Personal and business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Head towards something you're passionate about. That passion will turn into a purpose, giving you the drive to create your own business. There could be something that is entirely unique that the industry is lacking. Aligning or surrounding yourself with others can grow and share the vision. You can then develop a recipe that works and keep it consistent. Sometimes the journey of being an entrepreneur doesn't exactly go as you envision in your head. So, try not to get discouraged if you fall or fail. Those are the best lessons to keep with you. If you believe in your brand/business, then understand that's what comes along with being an entrepreneur.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Since I was young, I had to grow up a little quicker from the circumstances surrounding my life. Those experiences pushed and shaped me to develop a strong character and vision for my life. Taught me valuable lessons that would help propel me in my own life. To cut a long story short, It also showed me what I wanted to leave behind, and what I was truly passionate about. How I wanted to create my life, and change others. I went through some career paths, but eventually, I aligned with the industry I loved most. Went on to pursue a business/school with my wife, and brother. From doing commercials to traveling worldwide to educating, it's been a pleasure. Aside from that, I have many other passions which will soon be new business ventures for the future. I can't wait to share.
