Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bena Stock, Founder of Bena Stock Counselling & Consulting, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a former lawyer turned counsellor. My practice focuses on supporting lawyers' well-being. The practice of law is demanding and often results in lawyers sacrificing their mental health and their relationships just to get the job done. I was a litigator for 24 years before changing careers. When a lawyer reaches out for support, they don't have to explain what it's like to be a lawyer because I understand. I've helped hundreds of lawyers and legal support staff learn effective strategies to manage anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship problems, anger, and practice management.
I am also a speaker for the legal industry. I regularly speak about mental health in continuing legal education courses, at law firms, and in the legal departments of government organizations.
Tell us about yourself
I became interested in supporting lawyers' mental health while working as a lawyer for our regional professional liability insurer. The emotional toll that came when a lawyer reported an error or a possible error was often significant. I decided I wanted to do something to help lawyers who are struggling in any way. So I returned to school to obtain a Master's degree in counselling. I worked for several years with our regional lawyers' assistance program before opening my own counselling service.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
This question is easy to answer. My greatest accomplishment comes from being able to help someone feel a little better about themselves. If I accomplish that, my job is done.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I have always been a people pleaser, whether while practicing law or counselling. Setting boundaries for myself and respecting them is one of my biggest challenges.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do what you want to do, not what someone else wants you to do or what you think you "should" be doing.
- Have a plan, but be flexible with your plan.
- Be accountable to your clients, your business, and yourself.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Don't be afraid to reach out to others when starting a new business. And be prepared to go with the flow if your business soars in an unexpected direction.
