Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ben Bagge, founder and CEO of Pro+Kinetix Physical Therapy & Performance, located in Oakland, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Pro+Kinetix Physical Therapy & Performance. We're a performance-based physical therapy clinic located in Oakland, CA, San Diego, CA, and Des Moines, IA. We specialize in helping active adults, and athletes get back to the workouts and sports they enjoy without injections, medications, surgery, or having to take time off.
Tell us about yourself
I started Pro+Kinetix within a couple of months of graduating with my Doctorate of Physical Therapy. I was working in a high-volume clinic seeing 20+ patients a day (100 a week), and I knew it wouldn't be long until I was burnt out. I took my first paycheck and opened Pro+Kinetix to serve the active population better through improved 1-on-1 care that, unfortunately, most physical therapy clinics no longer provide (due to insurance reimbursement rates going lower and lower, PT clinics have their PTs see multiple patients at once to make ends meet). Time freedom with my future wife and kids is my "why" and motivates me day in and day out.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been helping other burnout PTs get out of high-volume clinics and giving them an environment and space to thrive. Ultimately giving them the environment to be the PT they've always dreamed of and doing what they love.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me, personally, has been disconnecting and not associating the success or failure of the business to identify me personally.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- 80% is good enough (everything doesn't need to be perfect before implementation).
- Have a strong "Why" to reflect on when things get tough and keep you moving.
- Fail forward.
