Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittney Ellers, Founder of Being Better, located in Carlsbad, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm Brittney Ellers, founder of Being Better, where we tackle the "taboo" and offer holistic and accessible pelvic physical therapy and education to help people feel the most confident and free in their body from menstruation through menopause. I mostly serve women and vulva owners between the ages of 20-45, with a small range of 60-75 as well.
Tell us about yourself
I started this company for selfish reasons. I was one of those stats and grew up where it wasn't exactly cozy to speak up about my period problems or even sex as an adult because of my religious and culturally strict upbringing. It's taken me years to educate myself (and I continue to do so), and now I've been working to change the kind of future young girls and women (and others with vulvas) can have.
I am a licensed doctor of pelvic physical therapy with six years of PT experience and 32 years of living in a female body, with my own experiences of infections, painful sex, birth control symptoms, and more. My clients, who I sometimes see as past versions of myself, are what keep me motivated to keep doing what I do!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have built the reputation on and off-line of being a woman who believes in the power to heal ourselves once we have the tools, mindsets, and support that works for us. I've been able to maintain my integrity with my body (in phases and waves, of course) while working for myself. I talk the talk and do my best to walk the walk.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Finding balance for the rest of the amazing things that life has to offer, such as friendship and travel, is the most challenging at this phase of my business. My passion is my work, and my work is my passion, so I feel fulfilled there, but I would love to prioritize my relationships with friends and family moving forward.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Follow the lead of your body. Know your Human Design and work it to your advantage. It helped me from becoming a burnt-out PT to a solopreneur with the business of my dreams.
- Don't be afraid to start because of what others might say. Chances are, everyone is actually rooting for you. Growing a business is one of the most satisfying things to do, in my experience.
- If you're a menstruator, cycle sync your business and workflow! Honoring your hormonal flow is life-changing. And if you don't know how to get started, hit me up!
