Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Vanessa Savoie, founder of Bee Healthy Meals, located in Thornton, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Vanessa, and I’m the owner and operator of Bee Healthy Meals. It’s a meal prep delivery service that helps people meet their nutritional needs, whether that’s losing weight, gaining muscle, or a specific diet like Keto, Vegan, Paleo, etc.

Tell us about yourself

Food has always been a big part of my life. Growing up, my mother was a chef at multiple restaurants. When she wasn’t cooking on the clock, she would be cooking big meals for our family, and a lot of that has stuck with me. Absolutely nothing beats a home-cooked meal, but I also realize how much time and effort goes into cooking; that’s why I was inspired to help others. I then went on to study nutrition in college and took a course on wellness training. That aspect has really helped me with the knowledge of nutrients, balanced meals, and how to work with a client to meet their goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far has been cooking for multiple UFC fighters; it’s exciting and challenging to help them cut weight in a short amount of time. However, I think the most rewarding part of my job is helping people who have restricted diets, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, renal diet. I find that these clients of mine are so grateful to have healthy food that is prepped and portioned perfectly for their specific needs.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In most cases, people who own their own business are never truly off the clock. I find myself constantly searching for recipes, new ingredients, and creating different menus even after I’m “off the clock.”

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get to know your clients and what is most important to them.
  2. Stay consistent; even if you have a slow week, the following week could be twice as busy.
  3. Set boundaries, make yourself a schedule of what times you want to work, and stick to it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I’m very proud of my business, and I’m thankful that so many amazing people have continued to buy my food every week and help my small business grow! I eventually would love to become a caterer for large events; that’s the new goal!
