Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Becky Rashidifard, a registered dietitian based in New York, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I specialize in nutrition coaching and digital products. I work with people suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Autoimmune Diseases.
Tell us about yourself
While I'm a dietitian, I'm also a patient with both IBS and Celiac Disease. I've had both for 17+ years. I've suffered from severe symptoms: diarrhea, constipation, bloating, chronic fatigue syndrome, hormone imbalance, anemia, weight loss, and weight gain. I visited 30+ doctors, nutritions, and coaches. After spending five figures on medical bills, no professional could help me. It wasn't until I became an expert in nutrition, digestion, and chronic illness that I was able to heal myself. Not only heal myself but thrive in my life.
Having experienced these symptoms myself, I am intimate with the patient experience. Diet confusion, symptom flares, fatigue, mental illness. Not to mention the lifestyle and relationship difficulties one faces. Working with my patients, I see my younger self. I have extreme empathy and know precisely what to do to move the needle forward for them. My job is less of a business and more of a calling. Something that I must do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have two. First, launching my signature course, "The Art & Science of Healing IBS." The Art & Science is the only course on the market that blends nutrition science, holistic nutrition, and psychology. Members report healing chronic constipation, diarrhea, and bloating.
Second, creating my 3-Month Mentorship program. Mentorship is an intimate, high-touch container. I speak with clients daily using voice notes and photos through an app called Voxer. Voxer allows me to view their meals and symptoms daily. This strategy allows us to tweak their diet and see improvement in symptoms daily versus going to your nutritionist every 14 days for feedback, which was never helpful to me as a patient.
In both cases, customers reverse chronic symptoms of diarrhea, constipation, and bloating. On average, they've struggled with these symptoms for 10 years with no relief.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Sales and marketing. I'm a creative at heart. I care deeply about the quality of my products and services. They are some of the best on the market. But products don't sell themselves. I can improve on marketing strategies, funnels, and promotions. These feel lifeless to me. However, sales and marketing are essential parts of growing any business. I'm embracing it despite my internal resistance.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Understand the skillsets and life experiences that make you untouchable from your competition. If you don't have these yet, learn new skills or create life experiences that wow people.
- Create a strategy for quality quantity content. This includes short-form awareness (Instagram, TikTok), long-form trust (Podcast, Youtube, Newsletter), and community building (group calls, meet-ups). Take the time upfront to set up a system that makes it easy for you to win here.
- Test and re-iterate your strategies. Feedback is important, and moving quickly is essential.
