Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yael Dubin, founder of Bechira Coaching, located in Tucson, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Yael Dubin. I am a former psychiatrist, and now I’m a relationship coach. I specialize primarily in working with women and members of the LGBTQ community who are unsatisfied in their relationships, in their careers, their romantic lives, or within themselves—maybe they need to be more assertive, maybe they have a lack of confidence, or maybe they feel like their emotions or stress are out of control.

I help them come to clarity about what they want and help them develop the courage to go after it so that they experience genuine fulfillment and deep satisfaction.

Tell us about yourself

When my current husband and I were newly engaged, we talked about our life dreams. I told him that my dream was to be something like a life coach, but with a spiritual twist. I wanted to help people see the divine within themselves and live with greater awareness of that aspect of themselves. He said, "If you know what you want to be doing with your life, why aren't you doing it?" That was all the push I needed to get me to sit down and write my business plan for Bechira Coaching.

I've been in business for exactly one year now, and I'm amazed at how steadily my business has grown. My clients make progress every week—they experience breakthroughs in their self-understanding or are able to change longstanding relationship patterns. Watching their growth keeps me motivated to grow my business. I love what I do and hope to continue contributing to other people's spiritual growth and personal development.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being a business owner demanded that I learn numerous business skills and step out of my comfort zone. I knew I couldn't just hang a shingle and hope people would show up. I had to put myself out there. I'm certainly not a social media or marketing pro, but my consistency and willingness to learn have resulted in a business that is in the black. I have recovered my investments, including my investments in training, books, certification, etc., and am already profiting after just one year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

What has been hardest for me about being a business owner is having to put myself out there and having to figure out not only how to do that but where to do that. Where is my audience? How do I find them?

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a business coach, especially if you're new to owning a business. I have three names I'd be happy to share, so please reach out. [I don't do business coaching, so I'm really honestly just trying to get you connected with someone who can help your business thrive].
  2. Invest your time and money in cultivating a referral network rather than your social media presence. It's way more effective--and fun.
  3. Be patient. It can take a couple of years to make a profit. Any "overnight sensation" can tell you about the time and energy it took to build the foundation upon which their meteoric rise to success was launched.
