Sweet Offerings - Becca's Cakes

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Becca Briffitt, owner of Becca's Cakes, located in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Baker and cake decorator. I make a very wide range of cakes from buttercream to fondant and 3D cakes for all occasions, and I only use one hand.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a mom of one, 28 years old, and I created my business from home after quitting my job because of having a child. It all started when I made my son's first birthday cake. I posted the cake on social media, and everyone told me to start a business. I didn't think I could manage that in my tiny flat, being a mum, and, on top of that, my disability. When I was 4, I had a stroke that left me with right-sided hemiplegia (my hand and right side are slightly paralyzed), so my whole life, I have been learning to do things with one hand. It was a struggle at first, but six years later, I am baking and decorating cakes and doing a successful business despite only using one hand. I hope to build a stable future for my family and eventually get a studio or a little shop.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is that I continue to grow each day. I have become well known in my town for my cakes. I'm proud that I've created a business all by myself, even though I didn't get very good grades in school. You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is keeping on top of paperwork and never really switching off. Continuously having to think of new ideas. When customers are rude about your work, they have no idea how much time and effort goes into the product.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you have all the tools and knowledge about what you are selling before starting.
  2. Be prepared to take criticism but don't let it put off your passion.
  3. Don't give up.
