Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Chui, owner of Beauty Room, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a boutique spa offering beauty and medical esthetic services to give our clients the best of both worlds - a medical approach with a relaxing experience. Our clients love our attention to detail and quality of work, which we have proudly maintained over the last ten years.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the esthetic industry for 20 years. I started working as a receptionist at a salon-spa when I was in university; from there, I was inspired by the ladies at the spa to pursue a career in esthetics. After working at various spas for eight years, I decided to venture out on my own so that I can provide the types of services with the level of care that I want to my clients without limitations. I am motivated by the end result that our clients see. Their joy and appreciation for our services give me great pride in working in this field.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Mainly that I have been able to employ numerous staff and to be able to offer them a chance to showcase their skills so that they share the same pride in their work as I do. Another accomplishment was the ability to expand and build a beautiful at the beginning of the pandemic, which gave me the drive and distraction I needed to get through it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats. But I have slowly learned to delegate daily jobs and tasks to others so that I am free to focus on my clients as well as run my business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Having a great team and hiring the right person for each role is very important - it will make daily operations and the growth of the business so much smoother and better.
  2. Make time for yourself and your family. Running a business can be very stressful, and burnout can sneak up on you.
  3. Charge what you are worth. As small business owners, we sometimes feel guilty that we are overcharging clients, and we end up undervaluing our services. Don't feel bad about charging prices on par with market value or above. If you're looking to build your client base at the very start of your business, then offer exclusive promotions or memberships to keep your loyal clients.
