Custom Creations To Suit Your Lifestyle - Beauty Corner

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Polina Voiler, owner of Beauty Corner, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

What started as a lash extension business has grown to include permanent makeup, skincare, and tattoo removals. I strive to provide an oasis where my clients can always walk in and feel warmly welcomed, taken care of, and be part of a family. As I have evolved and grown with the recent pandemic, so have my business and clients. My clientele generally consists of individuals who want to enhance their everyday beauty with a realistic approach. I like to be honest with what is possible in my scope of services so that my clients can make an informed decision without feeling they are being pushed into or talked out of treatment. My philosophy for the business has always been: Natural but Dramatic, meaning let people guess what you have done. When clients tell me that their friends or family say they look fantastic but can't pinpoint a specific detail, that is the biggest form of flattery to me.

Tell us about yourself

My beauty career started in fashion and film makeup. My skills have given me international experience and expertise to execute any style and design. In 2015, after working in the lash industry for four years, I decided to open my own studio and take my skills to a new level. Since then, I have placed third in the WestEnder 20th Best of the City award in the lash studio category and Best Lash Studio in the 2022 Canadian Business Awards. These small but significant wins keep me motivated to consistently educate and advance myself to provide the best service possible to my loyal clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Prior to the pandemic, my answer would have included a fully booked calendar, loyal clients, and local recognition, but times have changed! I think coming out of the pandemic without closing shop is a big win for any business. My business is almost back to its original glory, and with the recent business award, I am looking forward to the future. I would consider my biggest accomplishment to be my dedicated clientele. Cultivating such relationships takes time and dedication but also trust and respect. Without them, I would not have this business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Work-Life balance. Taking the time to replenish and restabilize yourself is crucial. Unfortunately, this is usually never realized until it's too late. Your own personal health is extremely important since you are the one running your business. It is very easy to get caught up in a hectic lifestyle, and sometimes it is absolutely necessary, but your own well-being is more important in the end. Also, emailing people back in a timely manner and paying your taxes!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your why. Why do you need to venture out on your own? Running your own business can seem glamorous but are you prepared for the hard journey ahead? If your why isn't solid, your business idea and strategy may also not be firm.
  2. Do it! Legally starting a business isn't complicated heck; I applied after a few too many glasses of wine and didn't realize it was official until the registration papers were mailed to me. Have a strategy and plan in place to guide you, but you may need to deviate from the plan, and that is still ok! Break down big tasks into small to-do lists, this will seem less daunting, and you will get more done.
  3. Find your support network. Sometimes your friends/family may not be on board with your ideas, and it can feel defeating and uninspiring. Extra support can come from Facebook/online groups, counseling, network groups, and other business owners. Becoming a business owner can be quite isolating, so having external support from others who are just like you can be very rewarding.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There will be times when you won't be able to complete every detail of your business competently. Delegating to other trusting professionals will be necessary for your success.
