Helping Teens Craft Their Impact on the World - Be on Purpose
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emma Perez, Founder of Be On Purpose, located in Roswell, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
As a career exploration and Life Design coach, I work with young people aged 15-25. My courses help young people craft a future they'll love and take their next steps with drive and purpose. They start by considering what is most important to them.
They envision the life they want to live and what it will take financially to make that happen. They then find the occupations that suit them based on their skills, values, and priorities. Then they find the best educational path for the occupation/s of their choice.
Tell us about yourself
I changed careers about ten years ago and took a job working in admissions at a university. During that time, I worked with life coaches, career coaches, and therapists to discover what else I could do. I had yet to learn what my transferrable skills or other interests had. Before long, I took a job facilitating college and career workshops at high schools all over the city.
During this time, I saw that students needed to get the career guidance they wanted. And I saw them grateful for the little career information I brought with my workshop. That's when I realized I could combine my experiences with my work and my journey to create a program just for young people to give them more in-depth, student-focused, holistic career exploration and life design.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I started a business at the end of 2019 with two children who weren't school-aged. So, my biggest accomplishment is that I made it through those years, my business has continued to grow, and I helped high school and college kids through unprecedented times.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is getting started. Shifting from an employee mindset to an entrepreneurial mindset can be scary. The beginning can be logistically challenging to balance a new business with family. But you will only get somewhere if you take a step.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Join a mastermind group.
- Surround yourself with people who love and encourage you.
- Every so often, remind yourself what you've already accomplished and how far you've come.
