Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gregory Anne Cox, Founder of Be More Marketable, located in Lambertville, NJ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Few copywriters focus on Boomer women coaches, but these are my people. As a Boomer myself, a coach for 18 years, and an experienced conversion copywriter, I'm uniquely positioned to "get" these coaches and their desire to stand out without sounding sales-y. I write copy for websites and landing pages, as well as web copy reviews and optimizing copy that isn't converting.
Tell us about yourself
One thing I noticed while working with women entrepreneurs on their message was that they all said similar things. This meant no one stood out, and coaching is a crowded field; standing out is key to success. The same thing happened when they would craft a talk. In order to move people to action, we have to be clear about what we do and say it in a powerful way. Many of these women were changing their clients' lives but weren't getting the leads or conversions they needed to grow their businesses. What motivates me is knowing that I can help them stand out with clear, powerful messaging wherever they need it.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Entrepreneurship is personal growth on steroids. And the desire to grow as a person as you grow a business is the key to success. One of my biggest accomplishments is sticking with this way of doing business for 20+ years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Many things are hard, but I'd say it's being honest about what you know, what you don't know, and what you don't know that you don't know. All three things require experts you can trust for honest feedback, mentoring, and or consulting. Knowing what questions to ask before you hire or enter a relationship with such a person is also hard because you don't know what you don't know.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have plenty of money to fund your start-up! No matter how small your business vision is, it takes money to start and get found. Struggling will cloud your judgment and steal your focus.
- Get clear on what you really do and who you do it for.
- Know yourself and the lifestyle you want to (continue) to live. If you are looking to earn $1 million, are you also willing to show up every day like a million-dollar CEO for the 3 - 5 years that will take? You can always grow beyond your initial vision, and I def suggest you aim high but planning for 6-figures per year is a much different plan than one for a million in 5.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Millions of Boomer-aged women are starting and have started businesses in the past five years. That doesn't mean there isn't room for you. If you want to be successful, you need a clear, powerful message that helps you stand out. It's not the only thing, but it is what will get the attention of your ideal client and begin a conversation.
