Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenny Noland, founder of Be Balanced With Jenny Noland, LLC., located in Eugene, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a functional medicine clinical nutritionist, Certified Nutritional Endocrinology Practitioner, Certified Nutrition Specialist, and Certified Nutritional Genomics Specialist, credentialed by the American Nutrition Association through its Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists™.
I specialize in applying highly personalized nutrition therapy to enhance functions of the digestive system, thyroid, and other metabolic processes. I am also trained in oncology nutrition for both cancer prevention and supporting patients during cancer treatment and post-treatment recovery. I pride myself on my ability to “connect the dots” by incorporating comprehensive lab and nutritional genomic analysis with a thorough health history and lifestyle review to detect nutrient imbalances in the body.
Taking a highly personalized systems approach, I have successfully guided hundreds of clients to overcome their long-standing complex health challenges and achieve much-improved health. My mission is to serve with care, empower, guide, and truly make a difference in my clients’ journey to more vibrant health.
Tell us about yourself
My interest in nutrition was piqued many years ago upon meeting my future husband, a long-time autoimmune disease sufferer. Witnessing firsthand the ineffectiveness of conventional medicine, a desire to find alternative methods to help him grew in my heart. This ambition only intensified later after experiencing my own health crisis.
I was suddenly diagnosed with thyroid cancer twelve years ago and endured a traumatic surgery with life-threatening complications. This process was shocking, disturbing, and excruciating. Beyond that, the post-op recovery was messy and poorly managed, leaving me tired, depressed, confused, and hopeless for several years.
As painful as this experience was, it blossomed into the realization and motivation that it was necessary to take my and my family’s health into our own hands. I then embarked on my journey of intensive study of nutrition, which has become my life’s passion. This passion has motivated me to make nutrition education a lifelong learning process, and my desire to share valuable knowledge with others spawned my nutrition practice seven years ago. Since then, I have been diligently working with private clients.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am always an eternal learner. My number one achievement has been and will always be diving deeper and deeper into various aspects of nutrition science by continuously receiving advanced functional medicine and functional nutrition training. Through this training, I’ve built unique skillsets in nutritional genomic assessment, oncology nutrition, comprehensive blood chemistry analysis, and advanced specialty lab analysis.
These skills have enabled me to provide highly personalized, cutting-edge, and comprehensive service by carefully designing nutritional therapy protocols, formulating individualized dietary strategies, and guiding clients in strategically implementing their plans. Finally, the most rewarding moment is seeing them overcome their health challenges.
Another achievement I take pride in is becoming a Certified Transpersonal Energy Healing Counselor after three years of studying and training in transpersonal energy healing. Healing is a multifaceted process. Chronic health issues often are rooted in unresolved past and current traumas. Emotional and spiritual health often plays an integral role in our health and wellbeing. By counseling clients to make this vital connection, I’ve been able to help them release emotional blocks as an essential aspect of reaching their optimal health.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The biggest challenge of being a small business owner is juggling many balls by myself, such as marketing, accounting, lab orders, etc. Among all these elements, marketing is the most challenging area. The best clinician may not be a marketing guru because marketing takes different knowledge and experience.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find a niche product or service that is unique. This process should involve extensive market research to see what is in need by the target population you want to serve.
- Create a business plan, figure out all the required elements, and then come up with a strategy to fill these elements into the process.
- Once you have a plan, start and make it happen one step at a time. Mistakes will be made along the way, but hang in there and be patient. Remember that mistakes are the greatest stepping-stones to success.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Success needs to be defined individually. Don't mimic what other people are doing. Creating a business that allows you to follow your passion is key to a fulfilling experience and long-lasting success.
