For the Next Generation of STEAM Professionals - BCR TechED
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Keicha Barnum, Founder and Director of BCR TechED, located in Decatur, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Ever wonder if you could learn to animate a movie, code an app or create a 3D-printed model? BCR TechED's live online courses, workshops, and on-site maker events are more than classes…they are experiences. Our S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) courses are relevant and relatable – perfect for anyone looking to prepare for a future career or become a maker right now!
Tell us about yourself
My kiddos inspired me to create my content. I was a homeschooling momma, always looking for a curriculum to keep my kids engaged. When they would peek over my shoulder while I was working and see my graphic interface, I wondered...why not teach them and add it to their curriculum. I now teach coding, graphic design, and animation online on my own platform at BCR TechEd and at local schools and co-ops.
I like to focus on teaching relevant computer science, digital technology, and digital art to the homeschool community by providing hands-on, real-world projects. My students don't just learn about graphic design, they become graphic designers. I teach them the skills they can use right where they are in 8th grade or 4th grade, it doesn't matter. They all have the aptitude, and I just bring a little inspiration and the resources.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I must say that every student learner who is inspired to pursue any aspect of S.T.E.A.M. because of my curriculum is a major accomplishment for me. One student, in particular, has made me extremely proud as a business owner. This student started her own graphic design and print production company using the skills she learned in my graphic design classes. It was a nontraditional path to seek entrepreneurship instead of college, but she said my classes and programs gave her the confidence to do it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
There are many occasions where my passion for teaching and inspiring is not supported with enough money or resources to provide the service. That is very difficult for me.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Work really hard to identify and then build your brand.
- Never stop learning new skills.
- Don't start a business until you spend time getting to know your customers and understand what they need.
