Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sandy Skotnicki, founder of Bay Dermatology Centre, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a board-certified dermatologist who has been in private and hospital practice for 25 years. I am interested in allergic skin disease, eczema, cosmetic dermatology, and product development.

Tell us about yourself

I started my own clinic/business in 2006 with the idea to provide a full-service Dermatology clinic that focuses on patients and not procedures. I love the practice of Dermatology and look at patients holistically. What motivates me is making patients feel confident in their skin.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have run my clinic solely for 16 years. This year I partnered with a wonderful company from Montreal - Vic Park Medispa. We plan to expand my clinic and take on new members to grow my vision and move into this new era of combined medical and cosmetic dermatology clinics. Also, I published my first popular science book called Beyond Soap, about the rise in allergies to personal skin care. Finally, I am helping small cosmetic start-ups with their skincare formulas- ensuring quality skincare, backed by science with low allergy ingredients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I found running a business, as well as being the main driver of business, to be difficult. Also, I did not have a partner, which was particularly difficult as a mom and certainly during Covid.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Surround yourself with people who are strong at what you are not. Lawyer, IT, accountant, banker, business consultant (how to set up your business), general PR, and social PR. Spend money on a good office manager. Try to get a partner- it's easier if you have support. Choose well as this is like a marriage. Have an exit clause if things do not work out. Don't over-extend yourself, grow slowly. If you do, you may be forced to do things you may not want to do or risk your ethics to pay the bills.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Find a mentor, someone who has done what you want to do. Women are very good at supporting other women in general. I love to mentor. Cold call someone you admire. You would be surprised at their willingness to give you 15 minutes. Have your questions ready, and don't hesitate to ask for referrals. Linkedin is also another good way to get in touch with those you admire.
