Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Dakh, Founder of Bareroot Nutrition, located in West Palm Beach, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Plant-based food coach who specializes in helping individuals adopt a plant-based diet and lifestyle. This can include providing information on plant-based nutrition, offering meal planning and recipe suggestions, helping people transition to a plant-based diet, and providing support and guidance along the way. The goal of a plant-based food coach is to help people improve their health, reduce their impact on the environment, and live a more fulfilling and sustainable lifestyle through a plant-based diet.
Tell us about yourself
I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2017. Ulcerative colitis is an incurable disease of the digestive tract, and when it flares up, it causes many symptoms creating a very challenging everyday life. In fact, there were times when I was bedridden for weeks. It's a very debilitating disease if it is not controlled. So I made it my mission to educate myself with as much knowledge as possible to learn how to heal the gut. I became so inspired by the healing journey that I used it as an opportunity to build a community and show them that we don't have to live a life with symptoms that prevent us from enjoying what makes us happy. This is why I do what I do every single day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am partnered with Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, and we're building an app together. He is a very well-known gastroenterologist, especially in the plant-based community. He wrote a book, which became New York's Best Time Seller, "Fiber Fueled." And has released many gut health courses to help educate people about the importance of eating more plants for gut health and healing.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Staying motivated to continue growing. When you're working as a solo founder, there's absolutely no one that you're accountable to but yourself. If complacency enters your world, it can be a tough route to navigate.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find your 'Why'... There needs to be something that inspires and motivates you daily to continue working on your business. When you find your "why," that's when you can continue to remind yourself why you're doing what you're doing and how it's going to impact your and others' worlds.
- Surround yourself with people who align with your values and vision. Community is key to growth. Spend time with people who speak your language, build you up, and encourage your vision to become fruition. This especially goes for people who are solo founders.
- Network with anyone you possibly can. Networking is a very underrated tool; if you invest time into it, you will reap the rewards. Never underestimate the value of an invite to any party where there are people who will listen to your story. Many times, if you see value in what you do, then others will, too, and are likely to connect you with someone who can help facilitate the growth of your business.
