Everything You Need to Be a Better Bartender - Barchemistry
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Wootak Kim, CEO of Barchemistry, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Barchemistry is my business. We provide everything you need to be a better bartender between unique barware, courses, and content. (we serve bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts).
Tell us about yourself
I began bartending at 22 as a way to pay my way through education but quickly realized that spending tens of thousands of dollars on a degree was not what I wanted to do. So I cashed out the life savings I had stored in Bitcoin to begin BarChemistry after only three months into bartending. I realized there was a huge hole in bartending/ alcohol content where most of it was too pretentious for the regular consumer to enjoy or too ridiculous for professionals to respect. I wanted to create content that was truly entertaining to anyone while also being accurate and educational. As I started my content channel, I also began developing a line of matte barware. Simply because I wanted tools that looked amazing and functional, I could not find them anywhere. With 2M+ followers /1000s of units sold later, I continue to grow my brand to be the education and voice in my industry that didn't exist when I was learning.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think I felt the most accomplished when I hit 1M followers. Or when I did my first 5 figure month. Both were goals that I thought would take me ages to hit, and I was able to achieve them much faster than I ever imagined.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Consistency. As you grow into new stages of business, new distractions and new opportunities constantly pop into your life. Keeping the same level of intense focus for years is difficult but necessary.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Content. Produce it at scale and keep your audience in mind before your vanity metrics.
- Be willing to do anything. You are above no job.
- Find and Keep Talented People. Too many entrepreneurs try to do everything alone. You can only get so far by yourself.
