Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Barb Handy, Certified Holistic Nutritionist of Barb Handy, CNP, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My holistic nutrition business supports clients suffering from SIBO and IBS. My clients are looking for a specialized practitioner who can dive into the details of how the digestive system works, what causes imbalance and how to rebalance in a way that is effective and sustainable.

Tell us about yourself

The story starts with my own SIBO journey that went on for 16 years before a proper diagnosis. I was left to believe that I was going to live with "IBS" forever with very little in terms of resources or support. I advocated for my own health and with the support of alternative health practitioners. It was during this journey of mine to digestive freedom that I decided I wanted to help others in a meaningful way. And so my journey to the Institute of Holistic Nutrition began, and here I am today - a SIBO and Digestive specialist!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Witnessing the changes I have made in my clients' lives. I have let them be heard and have offered them a space where they can feel safe. My biggest accomplishment is to make others feel the opposite of how I did with allopathic medicine and give people back their sense of hope.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it would be finding the groove and way to efficiently use my time to help clients but also to maximize the time that I have to help as many people as I can. It took years of refining my business model and also the way in which I work with people to find a happy medium. My business started one way but is very different in the way it looks and feels today. Each day I have an opportunity to refine what I have to offer my clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Networking - with your own peers is such huge leverage. Both in referrals and support.
  2. Invest in education and continue to educate yourself.
  3. Marketing. Find the best way to grow your particular business. If it's not working - pivot. Don't wait too long.
