Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in event planning but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Mullan, Founder of banksia events, located in Oakland, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run my own event business that specializes in social events and celebrations, weddings, milestone birthdays, baby showers, graduations, and bachelor and bachelorette parties; the list is as long as reasons to celebrate! My clients come to me to leverage my expertise and experience because they are either overwhelmed, want to create something especially unique, and/or want something memorable and don't have the time or resources to pull it all together. I support my clients in everything from concepts and theming for an event, venue sourcing, customized invitations and decor, curated menus, guest list management, and knowing which trusted vendors to bring on board to pull off a unique and memorable day.

Tell us about yourself

I started out in events at the age of 15, running local music events and loving every minute of it. I continued my love of events by completing a degree in the music business and event management, and in my career have worked on music festivals and international conferences, opened a national stadium and created its hospitality program, produced tech company holiday parties, sales incentives and VIP experiences in Australia, Europe, Asia, and the US. Post-pandemic and having my first child, I wanted to use all my experiences to create value for my own clients and create a company that does away with offering "packages" - my process involves underpinning each individual client's needs and priorities and how I can get best service these with a custom proposal.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting over the fear of starting a business first, then being profitable in the first year!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats - managing marketing, accounting, staffing, creative, and logistics on top of handling clients and planning multiple events at the same time!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
  2. Try and fail, then repeat. It's the only way you'll learn and grow.
  3. Follow your gut when making decisions; if something feels off or misaligned, it probably is.
