Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Amson, co-founder of Bang Salon, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a Toronto-based salon located in the popular east-end neighborhood, The Danforth. We have an extremely talented and passionate team of stylists who love to create beautiful hair and have fun doing it. Our goal has always been to create a safe and inclusive space. A space where everyone who walks in our door, team, and clients alike, feel seen, valued, confident, and of course, beautiful.
Tell us about yourself
I have always had a passion for hair. I have been cutting and coloring hair since I was old enough to hold scissors and a brush. However, I was not yet equipped with the confidence to follow my dreams. I worked in many different fields, none of which I felt aligned with myself. In early 2010, I visited my cousin, Justin German, at his salon, and I felt something spark. He took me under his wing and became my mentor. In 2015, we opened Bang Salon together.
Now, I love finding that spark in new stylists. Helping them become the best versions of themselves and watching them grow in their craft and careers. I truly believe there is space for all of us to succeed.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think that being a business owner in itself is a huge accomplishment. No matter what your business is, taking risks, making sacrifices, and pouring your heart and soul into what you love is admirable.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Building the right team. One of the aspects we are most proud of is the energy we have cultivated at Bang Salon.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Determine your values and make decisions that align with them.
- A solid team is the foundation of a great salon.
- Invest in yourself and your business.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Be mindful and present, do things that scare you, and never stop learning.
