Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance training but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matthew Sove, Founder and President of Ballroom Dance Chicago, located in Chicago, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Ballroom Dance Chicago is a ballroom, Latin, and Swing dance studio. We serve three main categories of clients: social dancers, competitive dancers, and wedding couples.
Tell us about yourself
I started Ballroom Dance Chicago after working for other dance studios and feeling like I could do a better job than the other owners. My focus is 100% on client and staff satisfaction. I'm here to make sure everyone is engaged and has bright, shiny, sparkling eyes every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment so far is keeping the business thriving (or just surviving during COVID) for 15 years!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As a business owner, I can't just leave work at work. Work is always present, and there's always someone or something that needs attention.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Be realistic about what you want/need from the business and what the business can provide. What surprises most new entrepreneurs that I've met is how much time and effort goes into getting a business up and running. The first few years (if not longer) are a lot of work.
