Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brittany Durrett, founder of Balanced Restoration, located in Austin, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Balanced Restoration, virtual functional medicine, and nutrition coaching were founded to help clients cultivate BALANCED nutrition and lifestyle practices to find the RESTORATION of our intended health. I believe that our bodies are smart and resilient. Given the right tools and guidance, my client should be able to live a life free of daily symptoms, illness, and disease. Instead of masking symptoms, I seek out the root cause and walk alongside clients on their journey to healing and optimal health.
I have a passion for educating and guiding women trying to feel their best, cultivating confidence and a balanced lifestyle, prenatal or postpartum journeys, or navigating the new waters of nourishing children and families. I'm committed to going above and beyond so my clients can create long-term success. Each client will learn about the benefits of real food and how it fuels every part of the body, implement positive health behavior changes and reinforce healthy lifestyle habits to ensure they feel better and are empowered to advocate for their own health for the rest of their life.
My virtual services include: 1-1 nutrition consulting, cooking classes, yoga classes, and personal training. My ideal clients are motivated people ready to heal their gut, body, and mind, using an individualized approach to healing. I am an advocate of real food and using the resources available to us in nature. I'm passionate about health, wellness, and delicious food. I believe we can, and should, have our cake and eat it too. My holistic & realistic approach helps empower my clients to make lasting changes that satisfy their palate, schedule, financial budget, and their unique nutritional needs!
Tell us about yourself
My interest in nutrition and wellness started with my own health problems after many medications for chronic acne, chronic constipation, headaches, hormonal imbalances, and a whole list of other daily symptoms I experienced. My interest spiked in addressing the nervous system, and I became a 200-Hr Certified Yoga instructor. I have spent many years as a yoga instructor and personal trainer. During this time, I wanted to learn more about overall health and took a deep dive into nutrition, healing my own chronic symptoms with diet and lifestyle changes. I then expanded my knowledge by completing a Masters Degree in Nutrition and Functional Medicine through the National University of Natural Medicine. This is where I really learned to seek the root cause, use evidence-based research, and help others heal or manage their chronic conditions and symptoms.
After many years working in corporate health and fitness, I knew that building my own business was my true passion. I now have the opportunity to invest in my clients and their individual needs fully. I love the flexibility to meet with clients virtually, help them within their own homes, and meet them where they are at (both physically and emotionally).
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I don't think I will ever get over the satisfaction and joy I receive from guiding clients to feel their best! This is such an accomplishment and so rewarding. Every positive testimony or review drives me to keep working hard and helping others.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The nutrition field is saturated with practitioners all preaching contradictory information. You could read two articles on how to heal your gut and have completely opposing opinions from each writer. This creates a challenge for myself and my clients to reframe our mindsets around the "rights and "wrongs" of nutrition and health.
Everybody is so unique - It's called bio-individuality. There is no one-size-fits-all. This has been one of the hardest yet one of my favorite parts of developing a functional nutrition coaching business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Practice what you preach, and your ideal clients will find you. Seek out a supportive community and mentors to surround you. Never stop learning because the moment we switch from student to teacher, we stop growing!
