Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristin Melanie, Founder of Balance Unlimited, located in Saco, ME, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Balance Unlimited is a place where people can let go of perfection and embrace what balances them. It is time to let go of other people's narratives of what is "right" and instead permit yourself to BU! Our customers believe in living a balanced life and that there is no right or wrong answer to what that may be.
Tell us about yourself
I spent years researching and listening to "experts" about what I should or should not do and finally realized I was done with all the contradictory info – I now know the only person who can decide what works for me is me. This prompted me to create a business that sends this message to other people to help them embrace what balances them as well. Balance Unlimited focuses on two key components of life: Wealth and Health. I have learned to be healthy mentally; there is a strong connection to financial wellness. I combined the two and now help people relax, retire 10ish years earlier, and get out of debt as quickly as possible (while NOT giving up the things you love – it's an AND mentality over here).
I believe there is no right or wrong to what works for us and what brings balance into our lives. I believe in the "and" mentality to life, which motivates me daily - showing people that they can drink beer + do yoga or get out of debt while still taking vacations. Helping people realize they are in control of what works for them, whatever that is, is why I do what I do!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is realizing that it is okay to need help from other people, and while things may not always turn out exactly as you thought, being open to what you really need is what will make you successful. After I left my W-2 job to pursue things on my own, it took me almost a year to find my place. I am not where I thought I would be at this point, but I worked through some hard stuff and did not give up. If I weren't able to change how I thought things should be, I wouldn't be here.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Understanding that this is your story and yours alone. No matter how easy or hard other people have had it, your experience will be different. Sometimes things will be hard, and you have to decide whether to push forward, change the plan, or give up. Putting too much faith in other people's experiences can leave you feeling defeated. You really just need to understand that this is 100% yours. You make the rules and change the plan as you need to. Like everything else I have talked about, there is no one cookie-cutter way to do things; this is especially true with being a business owner.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be willing to accept help.
- Allow the process to be fluid - check and adjust at various stages to fix what isn't working and celebrate what is working (be sure to celebrate the small things!)
- Enjoy the journey, and don't be so focused on the destination - even the hard and unpleasant things because they make the triumph at the end so amazing!
