Everyone loves cookies - Baking Sweet Memories

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meagan Jackson, founder of Baking Sweet Memories, located in Little Rock, Arkansas.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a small cookie decorating business out of my home and have customers of all kinds, ranging from moms, moms-to-be, brides-to-be, business owners, etc. There's no cookie-cutter type of person who orders from my business; everyone loves cookies, and I make them for all types of events!

Tell us about yourself

I originally went to a cookie decorating class for fun and found it to be a huge stress reliever. As an autism mom and someone who struggles with depression and anxiety, stress-relieving activities are always welcome. I kept practicing, and before long, friends and family were asking to buy cookies! I am motivated to continue this business because, even though it's not always so stress-relieving anymore, I really do love what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I guess you could say my biggest accomplishment is continually challengingly myself to be better. Even though I have mastered some elements of cookie decorating, there are always other techniques I can learn.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

By far, the hardest part of owning a business is balance. It's easy to throw yourself completely into your business- it can be all-consuming! Before I know it, I have taken so many orders that I am up super late decorating night after night. I end up with little time for my family. I have been in business a little over two years now, and I am figuring out my limits and actually sticking to them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. Be patient- customers don't appear overnight. It takes time to grow a business. Don't consider yourself a failure if your business doesn't take off for several months or even a year!

2. Create boundaries- decide on your "business hours" and stick to them! Business life can easily blur with personal life when you're a business owner. Don't let it become overwhelming.

3. Remember why you started- most likely, you started a business because you love what you do. At some point, you'll become frustrated/angry/hopeless, etc. Don't give up! Remember why you started this business.
