Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Miguel Del Villar, CEO of Backstage Health, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide Credentialed School Nurse services, both in-person and virtually, for California K-12 public and non-public schools. With the help of state-of-the-art technology, we are able to deliver Vision and Hearing Screenings via Hybrid-Telehealth to school districts in rural areas or with limited resources.

Tell us about yourself

I am a Credentialed School Nurse myself, and I experienced the side effects of the current school nurse shortage. The nurse-to-student ratio at my former school district was overwhelming and only kept growing. It was the increase in student needs that drove me to think outside the box and brainstorm a way to use the limited nursing resources we had to attend to our large student population.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to support a lot more schools and students than I had anticipated. Our innovative staffing services model has been well accepted by school districts as we help them fulfill their needs for professional nursing services. I'm proud to say we currently support students all over California.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is being able to get up, recharge and try again whenever something does not go as planned. The hardest thing for me, being a business owner with an innovative solution, was to find the right person to believe in my idea and to be granted the opportunity to demonstrate our services and what we had to offer. I had many doors closed on me, but once I was given the opportunity, the rest happened on its own.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three tips I'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today:

  1. Focus on something you have a passion for. Passion is the key to a successful business.
  2. Find the right people to join your team and share your vision with. Teamwork builds morale.
  3. The easiest to say but the hardest one to do, JUST DO IT.
