Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ayelet Shrem, Founder of Ayelet Shrem Coaching, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business inspiration comes from my own life experiences, thereby came my "I coach from personal experience" mark. I had changed when I allowed life to happen.

I am a coach and organizational development specialist. When asked, I define my professional passion through these titles, but the underline excitement is derived by enabling others (individuals or organizations) to look at what they can't see and design a path to brilliantly move forward. As I lived and moved through 5 different countries and gained firsthand experience of change, discovery, uncertainty, complexity, frustration, and joy, I relate to people's challenges as they work their way through different transitions and aim to meet them at that point of struggle to help them overcome their own mind limitations.

I coach individuals and groups within the organizational setting and detached from it. When it comes to the work realm, I derive from my professional expertise to enable individuals to move from thinking to "how to," translating ideas or feelings into actions. With over 25 years of experience as a consultant, executive, and employee, I understand the complexity of organizational dynamics in which individuals and teams operate.

Tell us about yourself

My life circumstances, coupled with COVID, changed my path and mindset. The foundation for change was already there, as I wasn't as excited and motivated as I had been before, and I was looking to once again feel that inner spark. Simply put – I was away from the high achievement culture I was born to, I was able to step away from traditional definitions of success, I was frustrated and bored by not utilizing my skills, and I was open to trying something different. And when a friend said, "why don't you check…?" I just did. One thing led to another, and there I was, rediscovering coaching at a point in life when I was ready for it – Mature and wishing to give back.

The everyday motivation to get up at 5:00 am and meet coachees manifests itself when the video is "ON," and I connect to people tune my thoughts to purely listen to theirs and, thereby enabling me to notice what they are missing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My (2) greatest accomplishment so far as a business owner is exploring what it is that I wish to do and how, and the amazing network I have created for myself. Meeting mind-like people who share and support wasn't in any business plan (as I never had one). It came organically from doing the things I am passionate about. And business-wise, I am still exploring and allowing myself to stay open to all the things I can never anticipate.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Each business owner may find different components to be challenging. I found the marketing component the hardest. It is simply because I don't enjoy doing that, and I am a person that commits only to what I love to do. Rationalizing it doesn't help; I just do it technically and suffer quietly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be ready to learn and start from scratch.
  2. Network.
  3. There are many ways to build your business. Find your own. You'll hear so many voices, but you need to follow your gut and follow the path that aligns with who you are.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Adding one last...I wish to celebrate diversity! The beauty of this world is the magnificent assortment of humankind. I coached people from multiple countries, cultures, and nations. We are more alike than different.
