Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Aya Egbuho, founder, and CEO of Icon Consulting Ltd, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help Parentpreneurs consistently hit five-figure revenue monthly without sacrificing precious time with their children by leveraging sales, marketing, and automation. Being a hands-on parent and a hands-on founder for most parents means you may be overworking, underperforming, and dealing with relentless guilt. I help you implement tested practices in 7 key areas of your business to stay profitable and give you back your time to spend with your children.
Tell us about yourself
I started my business when my two young children were 1 and 3. Like any new entrepreneur, I needed help. I was surprised to find that the business help I rarely needed, if ever, accommodated the realities of hands-on parenting, especially with young children. I knew that going back to corporate was not an option for me because that environment was even more hostile toward my new identity as a hands-on parent. I wanted to create a space for parents who cared deeply about their children and wanted to practice a family-first mentality. I’m motivated by the countless parents out there who choose entrepreneurship as a vehicle for financial freedom for their families. I want to help them also make it a vehicle for time freedom!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
What a great question! It’s one that I ponder every day. Of course, helping my clients stabilize their businesses and take them to the next level brings so much joy to my heart. But my biggest accomplishment is being able to give my family a wonderful life fueled by my business efforts! That amazes me so much!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I would say finding the time to learn all the things you MUST learn as you grow your business. Operating a business, whether successful financially or not, is a continual exercise in personal development. You must be open to change and growth! You must learn new things! You must step out of your comfort zone daily! You must say yes! You must say no! And your list of TO DOs never gets completed!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Find a support system. Your current support system may not know how to support you, and you may end up like so many people feeling isolated and unsupported. Be proactive about finding all types of people who want to support you, and you want to support them! Then I would say prioritize self-care. Your mental, emotional, and physical health should be a priority. Your business and your family need you, and only you can make the time to take care of yourself. Yes, you will have to say no to other things, but saying yes to yourself is always best. Finally, I would say have fun. There are many ups and downs to having a business, and if you take yourself too seriously, it sucks the life out of you. Have fun! Enjoy the ride!
