Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maddie Wallace, Owner of Awaken Family Chiropractic, located in La Jolla, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a family-oriented chiropractic practice in the heart of La Jolla Village. I specialize in prenatal and pediatric care, which means I see lots of pregnant mamas, babies, and kiddos. I also love to serve the busy entrepreneurs of La Jolla, the young professionals, the gym goers, the retired athletes, the parents, the teachers, and everyone in between!
Tell us about yourself
I am passionate about what I do because I wholeheartedly believe that if everyone received good chiropractic care, the world would be a happier, healthier, more connected, and peaceful place. And if we got all of the babies under care, we could change the future entirely! The world we live in can be stressful, and we need our nervous systems to be functioning optimally in order to adapt. So much of people's suffering is due to a dysregulated nervous system.
When our nervous system is being compromised, it affects every aspect of our being. We feel the effects not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. So I do what I do because I believe that we are designed to be healthy, and I hope to empower more people to live up to that potential.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having a thriving practice in the heart of La Jolla Village is literally a dream come true! Just being in this area and owning a successful business is my greatest accomplishment. The only reason I am here today is because my life coach encouraged me to go explore the area where I wanted to one day work.
As I wandered through La Jolla on a Sunday afternoon, I saw a chiropractic office, and through a series of events, I ended up connecting with the owner of the practice that I now own. If I hadn't put myself out there and trusted in the unfolding of everything, I wouldn't be where I am today.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me is the pressure to always be doing better. "Better" as in seeing more patients and making more money, as well as "better," meaning doing business a certain way that another successful person does it.
There is an overwhelming amount of information about how to run a business, and I can get caught up in the "should"s. I should be doing it this way, or I should try that new strategy. But at the end of the day, I know that what will work best for me is what feels right for ME, and that may not look like the way anyone else does it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Go after what you want and trust the process! Often times things come together in ways you weren't expecting. Be open to uncertainty and have faith in the synchronicities.
- Make sure you have support. My life and business coach have been absolutely instrumental in my growth. I honestly would not be where I am now without her. I also have had amazing support from my fiancé, my parents and sister who live here in SD, my extended family up north, my friends (especially those who are fellow chiropractors), and my entrepreneur peers.
- Starting, running, and growing a business is hard work, but don't forget to relax, play and take time off. Taking care of yourself, physically and mentally, will help you be a better business owner. Don't feel bad for prioritizing yourself over your business.
