Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Weiner, Owner of AW Creative, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a graphic designer specializing in branding, from name development to logos and full-on brand packages, including package design and messaging. My designs are mostly black and white or other high-contrast pairings. My clients are generally very small and often times niche businesses who also happen to love black and white.

Tell us about yourself

I've been a graphic designer for over 10 years, and I've been all over the map design-wise. Since graduating college, I've had my freelance business going. I currently work full-time in a unique brand agency alongside my own business; one gives me creative freedom, and the other gives me consistency. I think you know which one is which ;)

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making my clients happy on the first go-round of a project is a high like no other! It's exciting and relieving when hard work pays off, and it is reassuring that I'm on the right path and doing the right thing.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Imposter syndrome is my biggest enemy, yet my greatest friend. It's very easy to feel like I don't have the experience or all the skills to be able to handle it, but I'm constantly reminded that I do, I can, and I will if I just put my mind to it. By ignoring that imposter syndrome, I'm able to let go of any fears and follow my gut. It's a lot easier said than done and takes constant practice, but when you can get to a point where you can push it aside, you can do anything!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start today. There's no sense in waiting. Time will pass either way, and the more you try, the more you will succeed.
  2. Don't give up after only a few failures. Learn from each of those and always grow.
  3. Take criticism constructively. Even if someone is purposefully trying to sabotage you, you may learn a thing or two or see it from a different perspective that can make you better. At the same time, ignore the haters - they are low-frequency energy that sometimes may not be worth your time.
