What's your business, and who are your customers?

Aunt Zelda's is a cannabis research and development company treating patients suffering a myriad of conditions, including cancers, insomnia, pain, and anxiety.

Tell us about yourself

My background as a process engineer led me to question the way cannabis-based medicines were being manufactured and recommended to patients. I was driven to discover treatment protocols to treat specific diseases based on empirical data.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Changing the conversation around cannabis as medicine. When I hear words that I have been saying for years come out of the mouths of physicians, I feel that my work has been successful.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Keeping the lights on! It is hard to remain true to the company mission when money is flowing out at a higher speed than flowing in. Accessing money isn't always the issue. It is finding the right money and partners that are aligned philosophically.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know what business you want to be in, and be in it. It is too easy to be distracted by shiny objects.
  2. Develop a plan for multiple scenarios. Events rarely align with your initial vision, so understand how to pivot to remain true to the company mission.
  3. Surround yourself with experts and a team that shares your same passion. Business is tough, so it requires real commitment.
