Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nico Millado, Founder of Atlas Jewelry Co., located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Atlas Jewelry Co., and our customers are those who see personal style as a form of self-expression and want to elevate their lifestyle with their choice of accessories.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Nico, and I graduated from the University of Michigan in 2016 with a BBA but signed into the modeling industry shortly after. I started Atlas as a way to merge my business skillset with my creative interests and create a brand of accessories that I hadn't yet seen in the world. My motivation each day comes from being able to grow my own company, fuel my creative and professional interests, and continue building a remote entrepreneur lifestyle.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was when my partner and I hit our benchmark of $100k in sales. This happened roughly a year and a half into our venture.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is the responsibility to yourself and the company. Being able to celebrate successes and also take ownership of shortcomings can be difficult as well as rewarding. You are responsible for leading your business and your team, which is an exciting challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a mentor - for everything you are pursuing, there is a person who has more knowledge and experience than you in that area. Seek those people out and learn from them in order to be able to learn faster and grow more than you otherwise would on your own.
  2. Stay consistent - hold yourself accountable or find others who will to ensure that you are showing up every day to put in the work in order to achieve the goals you envision for yourself and your business.
  3. Be flexible - throughout your entrepreneurial journey, few things will go according to plan. One of the most important skills is to be able to recognize when and why something isn't working and continue to find and implement creative solutions to new problems.
