What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is Atlantic Pack & Parcel, an independent, locally owned retail pack and ship business. We offer our customers, who are our community, packing and shipping services, basic office services, fulfillment services, and so much more. We like to be everyone's Go to Place to find solutions for problems or issues, not additional issues. Our customers are those who live, work, and visit the beachside towns in South Brevard County.

Tell us about yourself

My husband always dreamed of a small business in a town where people would gather to hear the latest town news, get whatever they needed to be photocopied, faxed, or sent off, and have a laugh. He had such fond memories of grandfathers playing checkers on a front porch of a local general store from his childhood in a small town in New Hampshire he wanted to create that same atmosphere. We purchased our business and went to work creating an atmosphere of vintage, fun, wonder, and friendliness. Wanted a joke? We can do that. Wanted to send something to Greece? We can do that. Wanted to pack up your grandmother's china and send it to your sister in California? We can do that. Wanted a notary to guide you through paperwork? We can do that. We wanted to be a solution to people's everyday problems; we like our town, our community, and the sense of helping that our small business provides.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment for us, and pretty much any small business today, is survival. With the ever-changing dynamics of the world and life, it's important for a small business to evolve to remain viable and relevant, and important. I would like to believe we have accomplished this as we enter our 12th year of being in business!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

We are a husband-and-wife team, and one of the hardest things is for us to leave the business at work and go home. We literally eat, sleep, drink, and are our business. This is the case for so many small business owners, and we are no exception. While we have common goals and share wanting to achieve them together, there is often little time for oneself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

There are people before you who have done what you have done and achieved what you want to achieve. I often think I am my own worse enemy without taking advantage of all the resources available to a small business owner – including those in the business' specialty. There is so much information available; take advantage of all you can as it will only help your business ultimately. Here are my tips:
1. Go for education on your services and business!
2. Network with others with similar services as you; they are a wealth of knowledge to you as you are to them!
3. Evolve in today's world; it is vital to constantly be evaluating and evolving.

We have done a variety of careers between the two of us, but nothing is more rewarding than owning your own business. Best of luck to all those who are about to start or continue to thrive!
