Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Cummings, a yoga and Pilates instructor based in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My online class platform Body Language - offers a wide range of classes and tutorials. I also design limited edition bodysuits and other specialty clothing items for my brand, BODY. My customers are my students and anyone who loves to move and feel good in their body.

Tell us about yourself

I come from a dance background and have been moving and flowing my whole life. I started teaching yoga and Pilates because I wanted to be able to share with others all of the wisdom, joy, and peace that these practices have brought to my life. I love to create experiences for others to enjoy, whether through my unique rhythmic style of yoga or through the clothes that I design. My goal is always to hold space for others to find their own authentic expression. I love what I do and am very grateful that I get to share what I’m passionate about with others and hopefully make a difference in their lives as well.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been bringing all of the ideas I’ve had to life. Starting can sometimes be the most challenging part, so it’s really gratifying to know that you were able to create something tangible out of what was once just a dream you had. It always makes my day when people show up to my classes wearing my bodysuits - it puts the biggest smile on my face.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things has to be continuing to stay self-motivated even when the path forward feels unclear. Because you’re doing your own thing, there is never a super clear-cut path ahead of you, and sometimes you just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Just get started! Don’t worry about the bigger picture; just trust that if you start taking inspired action toward your goals, things will come together and fall into place. Also, be willing to ask for help and advice but be discerning when it comes to what advice you actually apply.
