What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the co-owner and co-founder of Aspen Haus Associates, a mental health and wellness practice in Richardson, Texas, offering services statewide, nationally, and internationally. We offer a comprehensive approach for a variety of issues and goals to individuals, couples, and families. We also specialize in leadership development and relationship coaching services, as well as trauma, grief, and sex therapy.
Aspen Haus Associates aims to cultivate and develop a committed team of individual practitioners to offer a unique team approach and environment in order to provide a unique, specialized, and comprehensive approach for individuals, couples, and families facing the complexities of life.
Tell us about yourself
I am passionate about creating exponential healing systems—healing that continues on in our relationships, workplaces, and communities in a way that creates a greater positive impact on the world around us. I am a relationship-informed trauma expert and a trauma-informed relationship and sex expert.
I love when people reach their full potential. It's a privilege to bear witness to and help people find their voices and reach their goals.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Cultivating a thriving and healthy team. I think good leadership brings out the best in a team. I have the most talented team of providers, and I want to do everything in my power to equip, encourage, and invest in their potential. If I do that, clients and customers get the best service. Our motto is to "be the best team to work for and the best team to work with." You can only do that if there is real internal health. Now, I get the pleasure of teaching other leaders how to find their healthiest selves and do the same for their teams.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Like a lot of small businesses, the last few years have been unprecedented and uncharted waters. I think to this point in my career, navigating that experience with integrity, vulnerability, and excellence and not losing sight of the humans in the process has been one of the hardest and most fruitful seasons.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Being a healthy leader is key to growing and maximizing your business and your team. Invest in your development and growth as a person, a human, not just as an executive or CEO. There are a lot of business consultants that will help you execute the business better (and they're great), but leaders won't reach their potential and true capacity for impact until they invest in their humanity and personal development.
- Live in the both-and. Most of life is not as black-and-white as we think it is. We want clear and clean categories because it gives us a false sense of control over the risks and realities of the unknown. The effort it takes to reach for this false sense of control is a major loss for most leaders, creates a great distraction, and is a poor use of energy. Learning to face the adventure without reaching for the false sense of control is a powerful place to live and lead from.
- Quit trying to execute others' formulas. Many young leaders reach for and pay insane amounts of money to gain access to "formulas for success," "here's how I did it, and you can too" programs. Business consulting is wildly valuable and has its place; however, I think there are untapped strengths and new ways of succeeding inside most leaders that go undiscovered because they are too busy trying to do it the way someone else did. Investing in yourself helps you find your own uncharted path to success.
