Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashleigh Magee, founder of Ashleigh Magee Coaching, LLC., located in Oxnard, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
As both a Navy Officer and Health Coach, I help military women lose weight and pass their fitness tests so that they feel confident in their bodies and uniform. And unlike most health coaches, I don't focus on restrictive dieting. But instead, I teach my clients how to create healthy habits in the four pillars of health so they can sustain a healthy lifestyle over time.
Tell us about yourself
At the start of my career in the military, I struggled to balance my work and health. Overweight and struggling with depression, I was miserable. I could barely pass my military weigh-ins, which was mortifying! I knew I had to make a change. I started with improving my nutrition and committing to small workout goals. By sharing what I was learning with my peers, we began to see results together.
By making small, consistent changes, I was able to transform my life completely. I lost the weight, overcame my depression, and learned how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. During this process, I also discovered my passion. I had helped others lose weight and improve their health as I became healthier. I found joy and fulfillment unlike anything I had experienced in the Navy, but I also knew I wanted to continue helping women in the military community. That's when I launched Ashleigh Magee Coaching, LLC.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a coach, my accomplishments are my client's successes. My favorite success story is a client struggling with fertility and her weight and overall health. We worked together for 12 weeks, focusing on creating healthy habits and undoing the harmful mindset around her body that she'd developed while serving in the military. About two months after completing my program, she discovered she was pregnant, and I'm happy to say she just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, the hardest part is having the patience to keep trying when it feels like the business isn't working or you're not growing fast enough. With that patience, you also must ensure you don't adopt those struggles as part of your identity. Even if an idea fails, that doesn't make you a failure. You have to be resilient to be a business owner!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, find a mentor or coach early on. I wish I had the guidance when I started that I have today - it would have saved me tons of time and money. Secondly, surround yourself with successful entrepreneurs. It models success and gives you a community, both of which are hugely beneficial when you start doubting yourself or your business. Third, don't make decisions from a place of fear. Fear will cloud your decision-making, and I can definitely tie my biggest business mistakes to a fearful mindset.
