Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Asha Holmes, a freelance editorial photo stylist based in Boston, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I specialize in home decor and interiors, products, fashion, and soft goods. I have worked with many different companies that specialize in home decor, lighting, grilling accessories, and clothing, to name a few.
Tell us about yourself
I was a home decor stylist for the largest online retailer of home furnishings and housewares in the United States. I conceived and executed whole-room lifestyle images, product vignettes, and conceptual product shots in their photo studio for print and web. When the company decided to go to a 3D imagery format, I said I didn't want to do that and took a leap into working for myself. It was very scary, but I was so lucky to have amazing colleagues who have worked for themselves and given me great advice on how to move forward and be successful. Creativity motivates me every day. My career goal is to stay creative and make pretty pictures or videos. It's my favorite thing to do, and I love it.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Making money! When I first started freelancing, I was nervous that people wouldn't pay as much as I felt I deserved, needed, or asked for. I am still nervous when I answer the question, "so how much are you looking for?" but I have been so fortunate to receive what I ask. I also realized that if someone isn't willing to pay as much as I ask for, then I don't need that job. My job is on my feet all day, and I am being asked to create something new and different. Creatives deserve to be compensated for their creativity.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I think the hardest thing about being a creative business owner is when you're waiting for your next job. I know that it is coming, but the wait time can be very hard, and you can sometimes start doubting yourself. I decided not to be represented by a company, so I'm constantly looking for new connections to hopefully lead to new jobs. It can be hard not to get into your head and doubt yourself and your talents. You have to remember you got this.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Trust your gut and your journey. You know what's right for you. If this isn't a job you want to do or move forward with, don't.
- Know your worth. Your talents deserve to be compensated.
- Know when you need a break. You are working so much harder running your business and can become overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of everything. Take a break. You deserve it, and don't feel guilty about it.
