The Global Headquarters of Female Empowerment - Asha Dahya
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Asha Dahya, Founder of Girl Talk HQ, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run an online feminist media platform called GirlTalkHQ, which focuses on amplifying the stories and achievements of every day, badass, and inspiring women. From entrepreneurs to filmmakers, activists, authors, movement leaders, business leaders, and beyond, the site exists to bring these ordinary women doing extraordinary things into the limelight.
Tell us about yourself
I am a producer, a TEDx Speaker, an author, and a storyteller. I produce documentaries, speak at and moderate live events and webinars, and I am in the business of finding the story in everything I do and sharing it in a meaningful, impactful, and empowering way. I am motivated by the fact that everyone has a story. There are so many women out there who are doing extraordinary things but don't get the attention they deserve. Having two young children at home who look up to me and are at an age where they are curious about the world, I am motivated even more to model for them what it looks like to show up every day for myself in an authentic way, follow your passion, and lead with kindness.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Giving a TEDx Talk in 2018, releasing my book 'Today's Wonder Women: Everyday Superheroes Who Are Changing The World' in 2020, producing my own short documentary 'Someone You Know' in 2023, and launching my blogsite GirlTalkHQ.com while I was going through a divorce at the age of 29, knowing I wanted to create something that helped me connect with other women, while also help me heal.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Spending a lot of time working by myself. I am very thankful for the flexible and remote environment I currently have, especially with my kids' school schedule. Also, having to find and create your own support network, which can mean going out to events and getting outside your comfort zone to find those valuable connections, even on days I don't feel like it. At times I miss working in a fast-paced work environment. But I've learned that things change with different seasons in your life, so I enjoy where I am and am grateful for the flexibility.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find What you love. I would tell them to get still and get real with yourself - what do you REALLY want? What do you think about when you fall asleep? What do you think about when you get up in the morning? What makes you passionate? Start there.
- Always surround yourself with people who are smarter than you and who can guide and encourage you in the right direction. Find mentors or leaders who are open to you, asking questions and learning about their journey. The more you stay in a mindset of learning and evolving, the better you will be.
- Don't compete; collaborate! We live in a society that pushes a scarcity mindset in a lot of ways. That, coupled with imposter syndrome and FOMO, it can be easy to lose sight of our own goals and constantly feel like we have to compare and compete with those around us. Take inspiration from what it is, and then forge your own path guided by your passion.
