Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with LaToya Cooper, Founder of Asanas & Wellness, located in Cary, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Asanas & Wellness is a yoga and wellness company. I primarily target people who are new to the practice of yoga and who don't have easy access to wellness practices. Most of the content I create is short in length to encourage those who think that they don't have space for wellness in their lives.

Tell us about yourself

My first experience with yoga was in the early 90s. It wasn’t a practice that I took very seriously at the time. But years later, after finding myself depleted and unhappy, divine alignment led me back to the practice. After experiencing inner healing and transformation, I decided to take yoga teacher training to deepen my knowledge of yoga.

I had no intention of teaching, but as I progressed through the training and understood more about how yoga works, I just thought, “I have to share this!” I knew that there were so many people who looked like me and who had similar life experiences that had no idea how yoga could give them renewed energy. I started Asanas & Wellness in 2020 to encourage others and to share wellness with people who think wellness isn’t for them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my biggest accomplishments was realizing that there are people who really benefit from my style of teaching. It's always humbling when I receive a message from someone saying how much they enjoyed a class or workshop that I've created. I'm truly grateful.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is when you're trying your best but don't feel like it's producing results. We all go through those waves but keep going. Energy flows where your attention goes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Become who you need to be in order to run a business. Take care of yourself, get sleep, eat well, take action, etc.
  2. Be clear about your goals so that it's easier to recognize opportunities versus distractions.
  3. Be yourself. Don't try to fake it 'til you make it. People will see right through that. Show up as unapologetically as you can. You'll attract your tribe.
