Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Asa Angel, Founder of Asa Angel Holistic Healing, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a holistic healer with an emphasis on accessing the more subtle realms of reality to help uncover blocks to health, happiness, and success. What this means is that I work with the energetic body and soul to reveal hidden subconscious patterns, energy blockages from major life events, and messages that can help guide you on your current life path.

In a session, we find the things you know or feel deep within and create a language for working with what comes up. It is my understanding that we are already whole, powerful beings, and through this work, we can open up or regain access to that which has been lost over the years. The people who come to see me are from all different walks of life, but all share the desire to access more information and energy than they had been taught was possible. We call this work the gentle art of completely transforming your life.

Tell us about yourself

As a child, I had a deep interest in the realms of the unseen. At age nine, I was given a set of Tarot cards and offered some wildly accurate readings (to my surprise!) for the local adults. Around age 14, I started to have prophetic dreams and visions of how life events would turn out for people close to me. I had a deep interest in healing and would study whatever I could get my hands on.

However, growing up in a pretty average U.S. suburban setting, there weren’t many outlets for me, and my longing to help make others’ lives better led me to pursue a career in education policy after college. I had the great privilege of working on initiatives in Miami, Washington D.C., and New York City, but it never felt exactly right. Over the course of my 20s, I began to study with great spiritual teachers and training in healing modalities like Reiki and yoga.

By my 29th birthday, I had worked my way pretty far up the career ladder in NYC but decided to take the leap and become a holistic healer full-time. A major leap of faith, but one that has continued to nourish me in more ways than I could have imagined year after year. Besides being absolutely in love with the work that I do, I truly believe that if we can heal and step into our fullest expressions of self, then the whole world will change for the better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing all the lives that have changed for the better since I started this work. I have seen people heal chronic illnesses, find happiness, start wonderful relationships, and pivot to whole new career paths, just to name a few. It’s really the reason why I love doing this work every day. I have had wonderful accomplishments like working for the Wisdom 2.0 Conference or leading retreats in Costa Rica, India, and Nepal – but it really is the stories I hear from my clients about how their lives have become better in every way.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Perhaps one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is having to forge your own path, as not many have done it like you before. In my business, I am trying to rethink how we operate in relation to one another and to our world. I have been lucky to find like-minded entrepreneurs to be in the community with, bounce ideas off of, and create new ways of working. It takes a lot of energy, resilience, and permission to rest, which can be a bit of an adjustment if one is used to traveling the paths that have already been created for them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Define for yourself what you offer and who you offer it to. I see a lot of folks who say “everyone” is their client when they first start out, but it doesn’t help you to define who you are speaking to when you craft your message and materials. Think about who you would like to be in the community with and go with that. This is going to create more impact for those you are trying to reach than a watered-down offer that is meant for such a broad category as “everyone.”
  2. Release perfectionism. I am absolutely speaking from experience. If you are interested in creating the “perfect” experience, or promo, or Instagram post every time, then you’re either going to run out of energy, or you will never launch. One of my mottos is “better done than perfect.” Of course, I want to have quality in my craft, but sometimes perfectionism is actually a way of holding ourselves back from actually showing up.
  3. It might be a good idea to work with someone like a therapist, a business coach, or a mentor to help you through the emotional turbulence that can come up as an entrepreneur. When we start our own businesses, we are putting our whole selves out there, which can feel quite vulnerable. Know that you are not alone; there are many of us out there who are going through the same things. We just know when to call on our team of supporters to help.
