Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food, beverage and the arts, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Genevieve Betournay, the founder of Art House, an arts restaurant and bar, in Ottawa, Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

A cafe eatery by day and a bar lounge by night, Art House (a.k.a The Art House Café) acts as an interface between the general public and the local art & culture scene. Situated in Ottawa’s Centretown West, the venue features hundreds of local artists and musicians on its walls and shop shelves, in shows, and through an assortment of other community or private events. Art House’s fresh, healthy eats and deliciously crafted drinks complement its unique energy and atmosphere in a way that makes every experience one of wonder and delight for all senses.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?

I come from a mixed background, having studied in the sciences but always having played around in various facets of art & culture. My favourite kind of work involves a lot of creativity, problem solving and systems development. The Art House and related projects arose out of the pursuit of my passion and purpose, and with those I hope to spread the positive impact of the arts, facilitating exploration, creativity and public access to cultural experiences.

As an entrepreneur, what does success ultimately mean to you?

As a business owner, I feel like my biggest accomplishment might be the adaptation, development and fortitude that have been required to continue on despite the multitude of unpredictable challenges that a business owner can be faced with, on both professional and personal fronts.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?

Continuing on despite uncertainty, fatigue, fear, and failure.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

Your resources are more limited than you realize, keep good track of them and consider your expenses carefully. You know less than you realize--take in as many ideas from others as you can. Information is key and before making any decision, remember that you can probably always get more information.
