Arranging Flowers Since 1992 - My Mother's Bloomers Flowers
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Neville MacKay, designer, and owner of My Mother's Bloomers Flowers, located in Halifax, NS, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We've been "Pushing Petals" since 1992, providing The HRM and beyond the love, laughter, support, and big hugs that flowers are for so many. Whether it's for a new baby, a passing wedding, or just because they DESERVE flowers (we all do!), we source the BEST quality flowers from around the world. With, of course, mindfulness, they are from reputable farms that practice social and environmental responsibility.
Tell us about yourself
Flowers have always been a part of my life; in fact, I learned colours and to count with flowers, and learned a long time ago the power a few blossoms can have on someones' mood. I am truly blessed in that every day I get to work with such beauty and get to help create a beautiful memory for someone special. It is an honour to make an arrangement for someone who's just arriving in this world, and also for someone who is leaving or has passed.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think, as a business owner, I take great satisfaction in knowing there are literally countless lives that have been touched in a positive way because of our efforts.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest, and most rewarding too, is that you are responsible: the long hours, worrisome sleepless nights, and seemingly endless "chores" are all worth every bit of sweat.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do your research....just because YOU like something, it doesn't mean the whole world will.
- Be patient and kind with yourself and to those around you because they will be your best allies.
- Remember that the biggest obstacle is often you! Practice restraint, and I say to treat a new business like a new plant...start with a smaller one, take care of it, and see it grow! And if it doesn't, then you'll know it wasn't the one for you after all...
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Look, when we started our business (in 1992!) I remember someone saying, "Ugg,,, not anther flower shop!" to which I replied, "You are right! This is NOT just another flower shop!" Be unique, make it YOU, and don't look for a "Piece of the pie" ...make your Own PIE! Good luck, and all the best!
